Canvas Series

The act of meticulously taking something apart provides the space and time for me to observe the material I am working with and reflect on the object’s cultural symbolism.  With a background in painting, I view the medium of painting through a Western historical lens. To me, painting is a sculptural form, with the materials of a painting canvas evoking that of body and identity. In this series, I unravel raw painting canvas — thread by thread — then tie the threads back together. Some of the threads are dipped in ink, reflecting on painting traditions in the East and West.
